macOS 27.2: a profile's still wallpaper shows again

Since macOS 27.2, applying a profile animated the wallpaper but the still wallpaper did not change: macOS ignored the video catalog, left on the previous version of its format. The app now brings it up to date by itself before each application, without touching your videos, and if that fails the reason is logged instead of passing in silence.

  2. 0.18.1October 28, 2026

Fix for macOS 27.2: the animated wallpaper restarts after a macOS update

After updating to macOS 27.2, macOS could forget the registration of the helper that animates the wallpaper: after a restart, the wallpaper stayed frozen without a word. The app now redoes that registration by itself when it opens — only if you had turned it on, never without your say-so. If the helper is stopped or forgotten, the Desktops screen says so and offers to restart it in one click.

  3. 0.18.0October 15, 2026

The wallpaper is produced at your display’s size, no larger

A wallpaper could be produced far beyond what the display actually shows — and all that surplus was decoded anyway, for nothing. On the test machine's second desktop, the picture went from 6016×3392 to 3840×2064, and decoder memory from 1,341 to 572 MB. The video is never enlarged beyond its source: smaller than the display, it stays that way. A desktop spread across several displays takes the size of the whole set, capped at about 14 megapixels. And “Modify” brings an oversized profile back to your displays' size — the banner tells you before, not after.

  4. 0.17.0October 15, 2026

One video at a time: memory breathes, and settings stop undoing each other

Each desktop kept its player alive even after you left it — several videos ran at once for no good reason. Now only one is decoded at a time, and a desktop you leave hands back its decoder: it restarts a little more slowly, and the machine breathes. A desktop spread across several displays decodes its video once instead of once per display — half the memory. Pausing the animated wallpaper now holds when you switch desktops, the app and its startup helper no longer undo each other's « Animated wallpaper » setting, and the « your displays differ » warning no longer fires when it shouldn't.

  5. 0.16.1October 9, 2026

An 8K video no longer takes over the Mac, "Cancel" answers at once, and the app pauses when memory runs low

An 8K video imported without knowing it could swell the macOS decoder up to 10 GB and freeze the machine: it now stays under 0.85 GB on every path — production, editing, structure repair, preview. Upscaling now works in tiles (1.4 GB instead of 5.5), and "Smooth" is no longer offered when it cannot hold up: the screen says why. When memory runs low, the app pauses and resumes on its own, and stops after 5 minutes with "Try again". "Cancel" answers in under a second everywhere, including during import; a click that comes too late says so plainly. "Stretch across displays" responds on the first click and the app and companion follow each other live; "Fit the image" finally shows where the image lands and the blurred bands.

  6. 0.16.0September 29, 2026

No more grey wallpaper on unlock, old profiles repair themselves, and a profile without its video stays editable

The structure that prevents the grey wallpaper on unlock is now required: a video without enough speed tiers for the display is no longer applied — the app says so and offers to repair it. "Rebuild the structure" repairs an old profile in one click — even when its original video is gone — from the error, from its card, or for all profiles at once; the repaired file is about twice as large. A profile whose original video has disappeared can be edited from the wallpaper already produced (colours, framing, quality), and if the video comes back, the app asks before starting from it again. Pause stays where you put it, desktop by desktop and across the screen saver; the screen saver starts smoothly from the wallpaper's frame and slows down on exit instead of freezing. Finally, the app always launches the companion it contains, and the companion quits on its own when the app is moved to the Trash.

  7. 0.15.11September 25, 2026

Slow-down the Apple way, sharp 4K on a 32-inch, and "Original" that says no clearly

Produced videos had only two speeds where Apple's have five — and that structure is what the macOS player relies on to slow the wallpaper down when the screen saver ends. Files are now written at 240 frames per second (120 on a 6K display) with four nested speeds, without changing the motion or the size; encoding takes four to five times longer than before. A 4K video enlarged for a larger display came out soft: the enlargement is now sharper, in the same time. Sources at 23.976, 29.97 or 59.94 frames per second no longer drift. Finally, "Original" (keep the video as is) could be selected when the video did not qualify, and the app re-encoded without a word: it is now truly greyed out, says why, and if a recompute is still needed at production time, the profile follows.

  8. 0.15.10September 24, 2026

No more freeze while encoding, quality levels, and a stretched image that reframes

Encoding from an 8K HDR video could freeze the Mac: the app now decodes only at the size it displays and stops cleanly as soon as macOS reports memory pressure, during analysis as well as encoding. A portrait video encoded at the screen's frame rate came out sideways: fixed (profiles produced that way change colours slightly when reproduced). Cancelling a production on macOS 27 now takes under a second. At analysis time, three quality levels replace “keep as is / recalculate”: Original, Optimal (the new default, no visible loss) and Balanced; existing profiles keep their setting. On several screens, the stretched screen saver and animated wallpaper can be reframed beyond their picture, a blurred copy of the same video filling the rest, and the companion's framing control now acts live without restarting the video.

  9. 0.15.9September 22, 2026

macOS 27: the still wallpaper stays put, on one screen or two

On a Mac upgraded from macOS 26 to 27, a profile applied to a desktop fell back to an Apple dynamic wallpaper as soon as the app's animated wallpaper was turned off: macOS 27 ignores the dynamic wallpaper catalogue when it is out of date, and our videos with it. The app now rebases that catalogue on the version macOS itself downloaded, before adding the profile's video to it. Turning “Stretch across screens” off now takes effect at the next sleep, without restarting the video, and turning the screen saver on from the companion no longer flips stretching as a side effect. The companion now shows a single stretch control. macOS 26 and earlier are unchanged.

  10. 0.15.820 September 2026

macOS 27: the screen saver follows the desktop you are looking at

On macOS 27 every desktop shares a single screen-saver slot, so the extension replayed whatever video it had mounted last time. It now re-reads the visible desktop at every idle start and cross-fades to the right video — including right after a desktop switch. The card switch is now called “Span across displays” and only controls that; our screen saver serves in both states, with each desktop’s profile, and removing the profile hands the screen saver back to macOS. A desktop switched back to an Apple aerial no longer reads as “managed by this app”. macOS 26 and earlier are unchanged. Validated on a single display; the automatic update from 0.15.7 will be offered within a few days — until then, direct download.

  11. 0.15.713 September 2026

The bundled wallpapers return, the companion follows the update

The four wallpapers bundled with the app, missing from the previous version, are back on a fresh install — a machine that already has its own profiles is never overwritten. And after an update, the companion is now relaunched on the new code: it used to stay on the old version, so animated-wallpaper fixes only arrived at the next restart.

  12. 0.15.613 September 2026

Multi-display keeps up with desktops you just created

A recently created desktop is no longer refused for “As a screen saver”, and the animated wallpaper spans both displays again: the screen-saver montage and the wallpaper’s per-display resolution now rely on the system’s live view — like the desktop list — rather than a file that lagged just after a desktop was created or changed. The companion’s pause switch finally reflects its state on click; it reads “Pause the wallpaper” or “the wallpapers” depending on settings, and after “Produce” the application to a desktop follows through without a second click.

  13. 0.15.512 September 2026

The spanned screen saver finally plays the profile’s video

As a screen saver across several displays, macOS was playing an Apple aerial instead of the video — the right one now plays, as a single piece across every display. A paused animated wallpaper now stays paused when switching desktops and coming back. The “Done” button is reachable again after applying a profile, and a new “Rescan desktops” button refreshes the list after a display change or a remote screen-sharing session.

  14. 0.15.29 September 2026

Born from a failed install on someone else’s Mac

The wallpaper is finally produced at the display’s real resolution — production was targeting a quarter of the surface, which macOS then scaled up. The companion switch now tells a damaged registration from a plain “off”, tries to repair it, and says what still works. A wallpaper already produced without its source no longer reports “file not found”. And the app itself is stapled: the very first launch no longer depends on an online check with Apple.

  15. 0.15.19 September 2026

    First published version

Signed with an Apple Developer ID, notarised by Apple, universal for Apple silicon and Intel. It updates itself, and four wallpapers ship with the app.

Good to know

  1. The app updates itself: on opening, it checks whether a newer version exists and offers to install it.
  2. This log is also where the in-app release notes point.
How updates arrive

Inside the app, and never behind your back.

One check a day

The app looks for a newer version at launch, then once a day. Silent when there's nothing.

And it switches off

It is the app's only network call. If you'd rather not have it, one toggle turns it off for good.
